Excessive torsional vibrations can cause meshing gears to lose contact and re-engage
with considerable energy--impact, resulting in "hammering" which creates annoying noise emanating from the
gearbox and ultimately leading to failure of the gears. In the figure above, vibratory torque between meshing gears
is superimposed on mean transmitted torque and shows the likelihood of hammering occurring at 1,200 rpm.
